I don't believe we met.  I think you were always well ahead of me.

I left Springer Mountain on April 8, 1986, and I climbed Katahdin on September 29, 1986.  I thru-hiked from south to north.

I found a trail register and photocopied the 1986 entries before I mailed it to the guy who left it.  It was a register called "Trail Bits" left by a guy named William T. Goodman from Florida.  He was leaving notebooks in selected shelters up and down the trail, and talked about making a book with selected entries, but I never heard anything more about it.

Anyway, from that register, you were at Rock Hut Shelter on Chestnut Ridge, Virginia on April 28, 1986.  (I'm not sure that shelter is still there, or maybe it has another name now?)

On April 28, I was at the Davenport Gap Shelter on the north end of the Smokies.  I didn't reach the Rock Hut Shelter until May 27.

So, you were definitely ahead of me.

You wrote in that "Trail Bits" register: "Still hiking en masse, though we're all straggling about.  Tom J. showed up last nite after hiking back to Damascus accidentally.  As far as why, just to do it!  It's no place to run away to, but a great place to go for lack of direction.  I'm addicted to thru hiking.  Hi y'all!  LARRY THE LONER, PARMA, OH."

I have also never made it to The Gathering nor have I attended any of the biennial meetings of the ATC.  Maybe some day . . .

Happy trails!

Hi Larry,
Great to see you again; we're doing some cool weather camping in 2 weeks in Ohio. We'll be using your site for upcoming destinations.

Oh gosh Larry, I put those photos up because I thought this was a general "backpacking" site and then I couldn't figure out how to get them removed when I realized that photos should probably be of the big 3 trail (blush).

I found the site by bumbling around on the web. Not really sure, but I think it was a link from another hiker's site. I liked what I saw and hope to embark upon some of the longer trails starting in about 2 years. The CDT would truly be my life's dream come true. Now -- where are the photos from? They are Pictured Rocks National Scenic Shoreline in Michigan's UP. I'd be happy to remove them if you can help me figure it out. Anyway, my oldest son and I went backpacking up there over labor day. It was grand, but it is not the Divide.

I tip my hat to you Larry for making it across the Divide Basin. That must have been physically and mentally grueling! I don't know how you did it. I will be heading up to good old WYO in a couple of weeks to hunt antelope.

Hey LB! That SNOW photo is our front yard in the last Nor'easter last week. Most snow here since 1995-96. What are the best trails around southern Ohio/Indiana/Kentucky? I want to get back to some of those underground trails in Kentucky, Mammouth cave and other spelunking trails. eNjoy!
